The real cost of cat litter in Canada: what you actually pay per month

The litter aisle is designed to make math hard. Bags in pounds, boxes in litres, packs of two, pails of 28 — and a price tag that tells you almost nothing about what a month of cat ownership actually costs. As someone who sets litter prices for a living, let me show you the two numbers that matter and run them on real July 2026 Canadian prices.

The short answer
Your monthly litter cost is dollars per kilo × kilos per month — nothing else. Big clay wins raw $/kg and no honest plant brand should pretend otherwise. But within plant-based litter the spread is enormous: from $4.12/kg (our 12 kg bag on subscription) to $9+/kg for US-priced DTC tofu. Same material family, more than double the bill.

Now the kilos per month — and why weight comparisons flatter clay
One honest wrinkle: clay is far denser than plant fibre. A kilo of clay fills much less of the box than a kilo of tofu — Tuft & Paw markets its tofu bags as 58% lighter than clay for the same coverage (their figure). So $/kg overstates clay’s advantage: you pour more kilos of clay to get the same depth. For plant litter, a useful reference: Tuft & Paw pegs one month for one cat at roughly one 4.2 kg bag. Run that usage on each plant option: at their single-bag price that month costs about C$40. At our 12 kg bag rate, the same month is about $19. On subscription, $17. Same material family, same box depth — less than half the bill.
Litter is an essential, not a luxury
Cat litter is a monthly rebuy, like coffee or laundry soap. We think the premium-DTC playbook — beautiful brand, US pricing, $40 months — has no business in the litter box. We put the budget into the litter (lab-verified 99.9% dust-free, 99.1% deodorisation, undyed) and into litter donated to shelters, and we keep the per-kilo price where an essential belongs. That is the whole pricing philosophy.
Straight talk: when clay is the right answer
If budget is the constraint, big-brand clay at ~$2/kg is the cheapest functional litter in Canada, full stop. People switch to plant litter for other reasons — dust and lungs (why I started this company), tracking, weight, flushable disposal where allowed, and what ends up in landfill. If and when you switch, the point of this article is simple: do not pay double for the same plant material because the box is prettier.
How much litter does one cat use per month?
It varies with box size, depth and habits. A common plant-litter reference — used by Tuft & Paw for their own product — is roughly 4–5 kg per cat per month with regular scooping. Multi-cat homes scale roughly linearly plus a little extra.
What is the cheapest way to buy Noisy Lion?
Per kilo: the 12 kg bag on Subscribe & Save (~$4.12/kg), or the 2×6-pack bulk bundle (~$4.17/kg for White Tea / Green Tea). Subscriptions are 10% off and cancel anytime — convenience plus savings, no commitment.
Is tofu litter more expensive than clay?
Per kilo, yes — honestly. Per litre of box coverage the gap narrows because plant litter is much lighter, but clay still wins on pure price. Plant litter earns its place on dust, tracking, weight and disposal, not on beating clay’s sticker.
Why is some tofu litter so expensive?
Usually brand and market, not material. US-priced DTC tofu runs C$7.80–9+/kg; ours is $4.12–4.58/kg with a published independent lab report. See our full Tuft & Paw comparison.
Do the month once, then stop thinking about it
Try a 2.4 kg pack, or go straight to the 12 kg value bag — $4.58/kg one-time, $4.12/kg on subscription, first 2-pack 100% money-back. Want price-math guides like this in your inbox? Join The Scoop — signup box at the bottom of this page.
