Setting the box up

Depth is the one people get wrong. Clay users are trained to pour about two inches, because clay compacts downward under weight. Tofu litter works differently: the granules touching the wet spot soften at the surface and bind to the dry granules around and beneath them. If there are not enough dry granules underneath, the clump forms against the plastic instead, cements to the floor of the box, and shatters when you try to lift it. Two and a half to three inches — six to eight centimeters — solves that on its own.

Pick a bigger box than you think you need. The rule of thumb is a box roughly one and a half times your cat from nose to tail base, uncovered, with an entry low enough for a senior or a kitten to step over without effort. Box size is one of the most common and most fixable causes of a cat missing the box entirely, which we walk through in why box size stops cats peeing outside the litter box.

Count your boxes. One per cat plus one spare, in separate locations rather than lined up side by side. Two boxes in the same corner read as one box to a cat that is avoiding a housemate. There is more on this in our multi-cat litter guide.

Put a mat down. Tofu granules are light and dry, which is exactly why they pour with so little dust — and also why they hitch a ride on paws. A ridged or honeycomb mat at the box edge catches most of it. Our full list of fixes is in how to stop cat litter tracking.

Placement. Away from food and water bowls, out of a dead-end corner, and somewhere the cat can see the room from. A box wedged behind a door in a laundry room next to a machine that starts without warning is a box a nervous cat will quietly stop using.

The daily routine that makes it work

Wait about a minute before you scoop a fresh clump. Starch gelling is not instant. Tofu litter sets fast for a plant litter — roughly thirty seconds in our own testing — but if you dive in the moment your cat steps out, you will lift a soft mass that breaks apart and leaves soiled granules behind. Those leftover granules are the single biggest source of box odor.

Scoop twice a day. Morning and evening. This is not fussiness; it is the whole maintenance model for plant-based litter. Because the clumps come out intact, twice-daily scooping keeps the bed genuinely clean rather than merely stirred.

Top up what you take out. Every clump you remove takes depth with it. A quick pour once or twice a week keeps the bed at three inches, which keeps the clumps forming properly. Most people who report that a litter stopped working after two weeks have simply scooped their bed down to an inch.

Full change and wash. Roughly monthly for one cat, every two to three weeks for a shared box. Dump it, wash with hot water and unscented soap — not a pine or citrus cleaner, which many cats find repellent — and then dry the box completely before refilling. Starch granules pouring into a damp box will soften at the bottom and go pasty. This one detail causes more my litter went weird emails than anything else.

Store it sealed. Tofu litter is a dry starch product and it will pull moisture out of humid summer air. Reseal the bag or decant into a lidded bin, keep it off a damp basement floor, and buy a quantity you will actually get through in a few months. Clumping, disposal, and the flushing question

Starch gelatinizes on contact with liquid. That is the entire mechanism. The surface of each granule in the wet zone softens, the granules bond to their neighbors, and within about half a minute you have a single solid mass you can lift out whole. It is a different physics from clay, which relies on sodium bentonite swelling and locking mechanically — which is also why a clay clump can crumble once it dries out and a starch clump generally does not.

Disposal is simpler than the marketing suggests. Scoop into a bag and put it in the household trash. Tofu litter is biodegradable, which matters at the material level, but a landfill is an oxygen-poor environment and nothing biodegrades quickly in there. Do not compost cat waste in a home compost bin — home piles do not reliably reach the temperatures needed, and cat feces can carry Toxoplasma gondii.

Flushing. Some tofu litters are water-soluble enough to flush, and this is the honest version of that claim: one clump at a time, on modern plumbing, never on a septic system, and never into a line that runs to a sump pump. Beyond your pipes, it is a local matter — several jurisdictions actively discourage flushing any cat waste, and California requires cat litter packaging to carry a warning against it. Switching to it without a revolt

Cats have strong texture preferences and an overnight swap is the most common reason a household abandons a new litter. The material is rarely the problem; the surprise is. Mix the new litter into the old at roughly a quarter, then half, then three quarters, over about ten days, watching for any hesitation at the box before you increase the ratio. Two things to watch during the transition. First, do not clean the box down to bare plastic mid-switch — a little familiar scent helps. Second, if your cat starts eliminating outside the box during the change, stop increasing the ratio, hold at the last level that worked, and give it a week. A cat that has held that position for more than a few days is telling you something worth a conversation with your vet, because urinary problems and litter aversion look identical from the outside.

How to choose a bag

Granule size. Finer granules feel closer to sand and are usually accepted faster by cats coming off clay; they also clump quickest. Larger, harder granules track less and stand up better to heavy digging. Neither is superior — it depends on whether your problem is acceptance or sweeping.

Dust wording. Treat low-dust and dust-free as different claims, because they are, and most brands use them interchangeably without evidence. If a dust figure matters to you — and it should if anyone in the house has asthma, or your cat does — ask for the lab report. Fragrance. Scent is added for humans. A cat has a far more sensitive nose than you do and a strongly perfumed box is a common, quiet reason for box avoidance. If odor is your issue, look for ingredients that act on ammonia — baking soda, activated carbon, porous volcanic stone — rather than perfume that sits on top of it.

Cost per pound, not per bag. Plant litter is lighter per unit of box coverage than clay, so a bag that looks small on the scale often lasts longer than the number suggests. The larger bag is almost always the cheaper way to buy, and we ran the real monthly math in what cat litter actually costs per month.
